An in-depth lecture on how to create websites powered by Joomla was conducted by the Manor's IT Manager, Julian Lilio to the following:

1) Marvin Gamboa (Information Technology Assistant)
2) Richard Tullao (OJT - University of Baguio)
3) Paul Jericho Pajarito (OJT - University of Baguio)

After they have learned the ropes, Paul and Richard were commissioned to work on prototypes of the following:

1) The Manor at Camp John Hay website
2) Corporate Intranet website

Lecture started last Monday... and they are on their way towards creating high quality websites using an excellent Content Management System. Guided them along the way. This is something that is not learned in school.

On the side, Paul and Richard will be rendering 300 hours of OJT work at The Manor. They are enjoying the new things they are learning from The Manor which they can surely use when they are on their own. In return, they are able to contribute to something productive for the organization.

With the advent of Content Management Systems, authorized users (such as department heads or commissioned employees) can update the content of the websites as if they were simply typing on a Word Processing application. No need to rely on highly specialized webmasters to do the job (which is expensive).

------

It will be noted that The Manor's current website is static and difficult to manage as far as updating content is concerned. Tendency is to be prone to having stale data on the site. Static HTML files are used on each web page which makes it a real pain to update information because one has to do it inside the source code. Design is also very poor. Further, if we modify the design, we have to do it on each web page file!

This brings us to the conclusion that the old Manor website has to be entirely scrapped and a new website be created but this time, using a Content Management System.

Moving websites towards a dynamic CMS using Joomla! is a leap towards providing better service to guests in the form of updated information such as on-going events, activities in Baguio, the current promo, any advertisement we can think of, etc., etc.

Last December, a proposal for the creation of a website using a similar implementation was given to The Manor's Sales Department by a web development company. The company's representative even went here for a demonstration. The price was pegged at Php60,000.00 for the services that they will render excluding maintenance. In fact, the amount quoted is minimal for implementing something like this. However, since we have learned that they will be using Drupal , which is another free open source CMS, the "service fee" that they quoted for the delivery of the CMS and related services is just fine.

However, since we have the technology and capability to use and customize a CMS on our own, we have decided to work on this. By doing so we will not only save on acquisition cost, but will also have the advantage of better manageability of the system and freeing us from the burden of having to coordinate with a 3rd party developer every now and then, and we will not have to worry about maintenance costs.

Note: The Manor's IT website which was soft launched late last year is also created using Joomla! but without the bells and whistles of fancy graphical modules and components as part of the requirement of being a simple information-based website.
