Update
on the Camp John Hay Development Project
Camp
John Hay, when referred to, pertains to at least two land parcels.
One is the larger area, which is actually the CJH military reservation
that encompasses the farthest extent that the base has reached,
in its variably increasing scope. The entire reservation measures
approximately 695 hectares.
The
other is the built-up area inside where the rest and recreation
resort facility is located. This portion, measuring 246.9967, is
covered by the John Hay Special Economic Zone and makes up the area
leased to CJH Development Corporation.
Of
this 246.9 hectares, a total of 48.43 hectares (approximately 20%
of the leased area) is occupied by the golf course. Only about 22
hectares (approximately 9%) have been designated where development
is allowed. The remaining areas will be maintained as managed forests,
making the camp an ideal ecotourism destination for both local and
foreign travelers.

The
development project for Camp John Hay being undertaken by
the CJH Development Corporation is in full swing. |
| As
part of the residential cluster in the MDP, a total of

| The
Camp John Hay golf
course sporting a Nicklaus design by Golden Bear International
opened last March 1999, and the Golf
Clubhouse became fully operational by 2000, servicing members
and their guests. Country Waffles and Starbucks outlets have
also opened near the 12th Tee. |
 |
The
Manor, the first condotel constructed as part of the
development plan, opened last December 2001. The Manor
offers five star service through world-class facilities
and highly |
| trained
staff. Manor Restaurant now operates the restaurant and
deli bar at the Manor. Meanwhile, construction work has
started for the Suites, a 287-unit accommodation facility
similar to the Manor. |
|
| The
old Administration building was converted into a strip
mall which now houses several establishments like the
Commissary (a duty-free shop), Premier Wines and Spirits,
Camp Nike, Adidas, Angles Billiards, Sportmart, Dencio's,
Carlo's Pizza, Little John's, Mile-Hi Diner, Camp Souvenirs
and Strumm's. |
|
|
| As
part of the ecotourism
component of the John Hay master plan, a two-kilometer ecotrail
was opened. A Botanical Preserve, picnic and other outdoor activities
and creative events, will be integrated into the trail as tools
for people to develop a deeper level of sensitivity towards
the environment. A butterfly sanctuary to be located at the
Mermaid Garden, is now being constructed. |
 |
A
riding circle and bridle path for horses, called Shalan
ni Kabadjo, opened in 2001 and forms part of the proposed
ecotourism center. |
|
| A
convention facility called the CAP-John Hay Trade & Cultural
Center opened recently. In the drawing board are a town center,
indoor and outdoor recreation facilities, wellness center, and
high botanical garden, among others. |
| All
facilities being constructed in Camp John Hay are pursuant to
the Master Development Plan etched by Government. The Master
Development Plan was made part of the Terms of Reference during
the bidding process. |
| The
Lease Agreement between the CJH Development Corporation and
the Bases Conversion Development Authority requires an investment
of P2.6 billion. To date, the investment put in by the developer
has amounted to P2.5 billion. As the project continues, about
P1.8 billion shall be infused to complete the project, exceeding
the investment required by government. |
